Though there are a few of those you should be careful around as well, but that goes the same as is with any species. I'm afraid I can't help you on the matter of searching for work, only warn that you may be better off in your shared apartment for a while as the cheapest places here are in rather unsatisfactory areas of the city.
Also avoid straying too far into the caves outside the city. The monsters are easy enough to handle, but the vengeful ghosts can be a bitch.
